Recommended cycling course
①Kushimoto Bridge & Hashikui-iwa Rock 17km / 110m (reference required time: 2 hours) For beginners and rental bicycles
Cycling around Kushimoto-cho casually from the hotel. As soon as you leave the hotel, the descent will start to the sea, so if you are not used to riding yet, please run slowly while applying the brakes on the front and rear. While avoiding National Route 42, pass through the city area of Kushimoto, and Loop Bridge goes to the famous Kushimoto Bridge. If you have enough physical strength and time, it is recommended that you go around the Shiomisaki Peninsula tour road aiming for the southernmost tip of Honshu. After looking at Hashikui-iwa Rock, the last hill climb is waiting to the hotel.
②Kushimoto Bridge & Kashinozaki Lighthouse & Shiomisaki 37km / 560m (reference required time: 4 hours) For beginners and rental bicycles
A challenging course that aims at the tip of Kii Oshima and Shiomisaki by taking advantage of the mobility of rental bikes with electric assist. Intermittent up and down continue after crossing the Kushimoto Bridge of the loop bridge, but we want to steadily proceed with the power of electricity without overdoing it. On the way, we also recommend taking a break at the bread and cafe nagi. After passing the Turkish Memorial Hall, which was built in the wake of the rescue of the Eltu Lulu, which ran aground in 1890, it is Kashinozaki Lighthouse. The scenic spot seen from the Pacific Ocean seen from Japan's oldest stone lighthouse and the nearby sea Kongo is unique to Kushimoto. Cross the Kushimoto Bridge and return to Honshu, turn left, and from there you will be a tour road of Shiomisaki. The stone monument at the southernmost tip of Honshu (the lawn in front is prohibited by bicycle) and the Tsubaki Coffee and More under the tourist tower are also popular spots.
③Monolith & waterfall worship & insect bite rock 58km / 700m (reference required time: 4 hours) For intermediate and road bikes
Once you get off the coastline from the hotel, run on National Route 42 for a while, then turn right. Cross one pass for the monolith of Koza River. After looking at the magnificent megalith of 100m high and 500m wide, the course goes east along the clear stream Koza River. It is also a point that I want to stop by the diving bridge of Myojin, which is about 21 km away. It is recommended that you go north from there and go to the waterfall worship, but please consult with your physical strength and time for the 18km round trip. Stop by the insect rock in Takaike formed by erosion due to weathering, run again on the coastline, and finally head to Hashikui-iwa Rock. Drive with special attention on national roads with heavy traffic. In addition, monolith, waterfall worship, and insect bite rock all have roadside stations.
④Nachi Falls & Kii-Katsuura & Taiji Peninsula 122km / 1400m (reference time: 8 hours) For advanced riders and road bikes
Take advantage of the driving performance of road bikes to sightseeing in Kumano. In the first half, run while watching the clear stream Koza River, and head to Nachi Katsuura next to the diving bridge in Myojin and the insect rock in Takaike. After passing near Japan's first private small rocket launch site, Spaceport Kii, we will proceed inland. A long hill climb continues from Shika Kawachi Ward to Nachi Kogen, so be careful not to supply out. After that, a dynamic downhill from an altitude of 560m to almost the coastline. It is recommended that you stop by Kumano Nachi Taisha, Nachi Falls, and Daidosaka along the way. Speaking of Nachi Katsuura, it's a tuna, so be sure to have lunch at Katsuura Fishing Port's lively market and seafood restaurants in the shopping street. Go around the Taiji Peninsula (including the classic course of Tour de Kumano) where the whale museum and the Hiramidai observatory are located, and go south along National Route 42 along the coast to see Hashikui-iwa Rock and hotels on high ground.
⑤Rafa Prestige Kumano 2023 153km / 3600m (reference required time: 12 hours) For advanced riders and road bikes
This is the course of Rafa Prestige Kumano held in September 2023. The course that passes through Kushimoto-cho, Kozagawa-cho, Nachikatsuura-cho, and Taiji-cho, where 49 teams ran, has plenty of climbing volume. There is no supply area continuing to the middle, so please carry plenty of supplemental lunch and water. The road surface is rough and there are many falling rocks, so take measures against puncture, such as carrying spare tubes and preparing sturdy tires. It runs in areas with low traffic, but at the same time, there is a long forest road section where mobile radio waves do not reach, so please avoid taking on the challenge alone. Especially safe in the down section. Since climbing with a slope also appears, you should feel tougher than the figure at an altitude of 3,600m. Please enjoy the course packed with the charm of Kumano.
